It is quite easy to make your own spice mix and the best part of it all is that you have extra control over the flavors! I like to roast some of my spices before mixing them but if you are making a larger batch of this spice mix to use later then it's better to skip that step.
If you like some extra spice in your mix then add some extra chili powder.
The sugar takes some of the edge of the chili powder and adds an extra dimension.
The ingredients for mexican spice mix:
- 5 gram chili powder;
- 10 gram paprika;
- 10 gram cumin;
- 5 gram sea salt; grinded
- 5 gram sugar;
- 10 gram garlic powder;
How to make mexican spice mix?
- Roast the chili powder, the paprika, the cumin and the garlic powder in a frying pan without any oil for about 3 minutes. Make sure you don't burn it, you just want the flavors to come out. You should be able to smell when it's done
- Crush the chili powder, the paprika, the cumin, the sea salt, the sugar and the garlic powder in a blender or a mortar; using a mortar will give a more authentic structure to the result.
- Your result is ready for further use.
